BIBL 101 New Testament Survey

3 Credit Hours

An in-depth analysis of the Greek canon. The course highlights the key facts in each book of the New Testament. The student will gain spiritual understanding of the four Gospels and the writings of Paul and the apostles. Applications to contemporary living are included.

BIBL 131 Bible History and Geography

3 Credit Hours

A survey of Bible lands, geography and history. The survey of history moves from the journeys of Abraham and Israel through the rise and fall of nations and empires to the spread of the gospel as recorded in the New Testament. A concluding section brings the student a contemporary update on archaeology.

BIBL 201 Old Testament Survey I

3 Credit Hours

A comprehensive analysis of the Hebrew canon. The course acquaints the student with key facts in each book of the Old Testament and how they relate and fit together. The student will gain spiritual understanding of Old Testament history, poetry, and prophecy. This course takes the student from Genesis through the historical books.

BIBL 251 New Testament Greek I:

3 Credit Hours

A comprehensive study of the language of the New Testament. This course is focused on learning the Greek language as a tool for ministry rather than just an academic discipline. All exercises are from the Bible, which is an encouragement to the student of the Bible. There is no prerequisite required for New Testament Greek I..

BIBL 255 Life of Christ

3 Credit Hours

A chronological study of the life of Christ from the parallel accounts in the four Gospels. The life and ministry of Jesus are divided into generally accepted periods. The course is informative, inspirational, and practical in its application.

BIBL 310 Psalms

3 Credit Hours

An analysis of the Psalter and the Hebrew/Christian prayer book and hymnal. The course studies the Psalms, noting the authorship, historical setting, structure, meaning and spiritual application of each, plus an overview of such matters as the classification of the Psalms, the Messianic application and citation of the Psalms in the New Testament and their function in the Early Church.

BIBL 312 Acts

3 Credit Hours

A study of the continuing ministry of the risen Christ by the Holy Spirit through the Church, as described in the Book of Acts. The course deals with the birth of the Church, the spread of the gospel, and the victories provided by Christ through the Spirit.

BIBL 320 Genesis

3 Credit Hours An analytical study of Genesis emphasizing the four events relating to origins in chapters 1-11, and the four personalities related to the establishment and continuation of the Abrahamic Covenant in chapters 12-50. This study traces God's redemptive plan from its promise in Eden to His formation of a chosen people through whom the plan would be realized.

BIBL 339 Isaiah

3 Credit Hours

An analytic treatment of the book of Isaiah, including a study of the life of the Prophet Isaiah, his times, his message to Israel, and his Messianic prophesies. The matter of authorship will be addressed, but emphasis will be given to exposition of selected passages in light of major themes of the book.

BIBL 349 Romans

3 Credit Hours

An intensive exegetical study of Paul's Epistle to the Romans with special attention to the theological concepts of law, righteousness, justification by grace through faith, sanctification by the Holy Spirit, and the place of Israel in God's plan.

BIBL 359 First & Second Corinthians

3 Credit Hours

An analysis and exposition of 1 and 2 Corinthians, with special treatment of 1 Corinthians 12-14. Attention is given to the historical background, doctrinal teaching, devotional value, and contemporary application of the literature.

BIBL 363 Hebrews

3 Credit Hours

An in-depth study of the great themes of the book of Hebrews, including a discussion of authorship, historical context, purpose of writing and relevance to present day Christian living. The course includes a study of direct and indirect authority, as well as submission and obedience to God’s will.

THEO 241 Biblical Theology of Prayer

3 Credit Hours

A study of biblical instructions and precedents regarding prayer in the life of the individual and the Church, with the purpose of establishing a biblical pattern of prayer and understanding its relationship to effective Christian life and ministry.

THEO 255 Holy Spirit

3 Credit Hours

A practical overview of the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament, New Testament, Church history, today and in the future. The class will explore the theology of the Holy Spirit and His activity in the Book of Acts. It will provide an understanding of the gifts of the Spirit as found in I Corinthians and the fruit of the Spirit found in Galatians 5.

 

 

THEO 279 History of Pentecostalism

3 Credit Hours

A study of the origin and development of the Assemblies of God and other Pentecostal denominations. The course traces the roots of these fellowships not only to the outpouring of the Spirit at the beginning of the twentieth century, but also to the early church and the Day of Pentecost. The study examines the forces, which brought the Fellowship of ministers and churches together and how the spirit and effectiveness of the Pentecostal revival must be retained.

THEO 291 World Missions Perspectives

3 Credit Hours

A study of the history and development of Assemblies of God missions in the context of the modern missions movement. Attention is given to the biblical and theological basis for missions, the call and qualifications for missionary work.

THEO 305 Church History I

3 Credit Hours

A study of the major personalities in the Church history and the historical development of the Christian Church and its influence in world history from the time of the church fathers, through the founding of the Roman church, through the Middle Ages, the Reformation, and its progress to the development of English Protestantism. This study is taught over two quarters (THEO 305 and 306).

THEO 306 Church History II

3 Credit Hours

A study of the major personalities in the Church history and the historical development of the Christian Church and its influence in world history from the time of the church fathers, through the founding of the Roman church, through the Middle Ages, the Reformation, and its progress to the development of English Protestantism. This study is taught over two quarters (THEO 305 and 306).

THEO 311 Systematic Theology I

3 Credit Hours

A survey of major doctrines, which comprise the basis of a believer’s faith. Specific areas of study include the inspiration of the Scriptures, the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ, the fall of man and mankind’s need of a savior. The course encompasses a thorough presentation of the doctrine of salvation.

3 Credit Hours

A continuation of Systematic Theology I, including a survey of the major doctrines of Church, the Holy Spirit (Pneumatology) and the end times (eschatology).

 

 

 

THEO 340 Biblical Hermeneutics

3 Credit Hours

An introductory study of the principles and methods of correctly ascertaining the meaning of a biblical text and properly applying it to the contemporary situation. Special attention will be given to the interpretation of Scripture in its grammatical, historical, cultural, and theological context.

THEO 371 Theology of Worship

3 Credit Hours

An exposition of the scriptural foundations and spiritual dynamics of individual and corporate praise and worship. Considers also the theological basis and practical implications of music as it relates the planning and implementation of the contemporary worship service.

THEO 376 Apologetics

3 Credit Hours

A philosophical study of the evidential bases for Christian faith. This course helps students explore the relationship between faith and reason and develop a reasoned defense of the Christian worldview against rivals such as naturalism and humanism.

THEO 377 Eschatology

3 Credit Hours

An advanced study of the doctrine of last things, including such topics as: death and the intermediate state; resurrection and rapture; views of the tribulation; millennial views; judgment; and the final state of the righteous and the wicked.

PRTH 129 Personal Evangelism

3 Credit Hours

A course designed to enhance the student’s basic understanding of evangelism and methods of evangelism from a Biblical, theological and historical perspective. Special attention is given to such concepts as conversion, reconciliation, forgiveness, adoption, grace and mission. The student is encouraged to become bolder in witnessing and to make personal evangelism a regular part of his/her life.

PRTH 245 Marriage and Family

3 Credit Hours

A study of the history, purpose, benefits, challenges, and contemporary views of marriage and family life. Emphasizes the development of: a biblical perspective on marriage and family; a personal philosophy of the pastor's priorities in relationship to his/her own marriage and family; and an understanding of the church's role in developing and enhancing Christian family life. Includes discussion on subjects such as courtship, preparation for marriage, sexuality in marriage, divorce, child rearing and discipline, and the impact of aging on marriages.

PRTH 251 Youth Ministry

3 Credit Hours

This course prepares the student for ministries in the local church with junior high, senior high, and college level youth. It aims at the development of a program suited to the needs of young people in the areas of worship, Biblical education, fellowship and evangelism. Considered also are practical matters such as working in camps, planning retreats, relating to parents, and guiding youth in ethical problems particular to their age.

PRTH 252 Introduction to Preaching

3 Credit Hours

An introduction to the various aspects and methods of effectively communicating the Gospel to the listener. Included are sermon design and delivery style, using hermeneutics and homiletics to establish framing methods.

PRTH 253 Sermon Preparation

3 Credit Hours

An introduction to the practical techniques of sermon preparation. The techniques are applied by directed experiences to sermon preparation. Attention is given to sermon types and to the content, logical structure and principles for organizing a sermon. Includes discussion of the step-by-step process of constructing sermons and building a preaching program based on the exposition of biblical passages.

PRTH 271 Principles of Leadership

3 Credit Hours

A study leading to the development of a biblical theology of leadership and an understanding of the pastor's administrative responsibilities. Consideration is given to identifying leadership traits and developing leadership skills such as: clarifying and advocating corporate vision; operationalizing that vision through a mission statement and organizational structure; planning and managing change in an organization; managing conflict; and motivating people. Includes discussion of staff relations, boards and committees, office administration, time management, accounting, budgeting, financial recording keeping, tax responsibility, and insurance.

PRTH 301 Ethics

3 Credit Hours

An examination, in light of the teachings of Scripture, of the moral principles governing human conduct. Special attention is given to the minister's code of ethics in relating to his family, fellow ministers, congregation, community, and denomination, and contemporary personal, economic, and social moral problems.

PRTH 335 Church and Law

3 Credit Hours A study of the laws affecting clergy and churches in such matters as incorporation procedures, contracts, deeds, bonds, insurance, legal liabilities, negligence, taxation, estate planning, and criminal law as it relates to clergy malpractice and pastoral counseling. Examines the relationship between church and state.

PRTH 341 Leadership in Christian Education 3 Credit Hours

A study leading to the development of a theology of Christian education and an understanding of its central role in accomplishing the mission of the church. Planning, programming, budgeting, staffing, and evaluating are considered in relation to the organization and administration of Christian education in the local church.

PRTH 346 Cross-Cultural Communication 3 Credit Hours

The principles, processes, and problems of communicating from one culture to another. Special attention will be given to the development of attitudes and methods that will enable effective communication of the Gospel to people in other cultures.

PRTH 348 World Religions and Cults 3 Credit Hours

A comparative examination of the tenets of the major religions of the world, such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Shinto, Islam, animism, and Confucianism. Includes a study of modern cults their characteristics, doctrines, and differences from Christian orthodoxy. Attention is given to equipping the student with the knowledge necessary to approach intelligently and witness effectively to those adhering to non-Christian religions.

PRTH 381 Biblical Counseling 3 Credit Hours

A study of the basic concepts and techniques of counseling, including the effective use of Scripture in counseling. Attention is given to special areas of counseling: young people, the emotionally and mentally ill, and those with marriage problems.

PRTH 382 Pastoral Theology 3 Credit Hours

A practical overview of the pastor's qualifications and calling, the church's invitation and termination, the pastor's personal life, the nurture and care of the church, and spiritual and administrative duties (including communion, water baptisms, weddings, funerals, infant dedication, hospital visitation, business meetings, building programs, missions conventions, etc.).

 

PracticumPracticum/Supervised MinistrySupervised Ministry Division

SUMI 201 Supervised Ministry 2 Credit Hours

Designed for students to explore and become involved in a specific ministry at Canyon Hills Assembly of God or some other approved ministry setting. One major purpose of this course is to process personal and ministerial issues that arise out of involvement. There are three mandatory one-hour group meeting of all students to dialogue about that process. The student is expected to spend a minimum of two hours per week of the quarter outside of the dialogue session in the chosen ministry area.

SUMI 251 Practicum (3 Credit Hours)

Designed for students who are in their last year of the Associate degree program to spend at least seven hours per week of the quarter in a ministry setting. The student will be required to demonstrate his or her skill level in various ministry areas. (SUMI 201 is a prerequisite.)

ANTH 102 Introduction to Cultural Anthropology (3 Credit Hours)

A study of human culture emphasizing culture's origins and processes. The development of concepts and theories about human culture, which apply to life in both primitive and modern societies.

COMM 101 Speech and Communication (3 Credit Hours)

Survey of the basics of speech including oratory, debate, and extemporaneous speaking. Emphasis on development of the minister's public speaking experience.

ENGL 102 Composition and Research (3 Credit Hours)

This course is designed to train the student in writing for research using a college level library as well as the Internet. Coursework will include a documented essay, a fact-based research project, a literary based research project, and will conclude with a biblically based research project combining skills from the previous projects.

MATH 104 Mathematics (3 Credit Hours)

A course for general education emphasizing the ideas and concepts of mathematics. Special emphasis placed on the comprehension of areas of church finance, such as general ledger, accounts receivable and payable, income and expense statements, and balance sheets.

 

Lifeforming Coaching Division

TLC 100 Real Talk Training (Introduction to Coaching) (1 Credit Hour)

Real Talk Training is a one-day introductory seminar, training leaders in interpersonal communication skills. RTT is an interactive experience including demonstration, practice and constructive feedback. Drawing from the same insights and exercises of the intensive classes, the class equips students to use professional coaching techniques to revolutionize their everyday communications.

TLC 110 Accelerated Coach Training (4 Credit Hours)

Leadership coaching is a skill that will benefit all individuals involved in ministry. This is a fifteen week course where the student will receive training in leadership coaching through being coached, putting acquired coaching principles to work in their own life and then using them to begin coaching others. An authentic peer coaching relationship will be developed, along with the nurturing of the heart and disciplines of a coach and experience on how growth is multiplied in a coaching community that are learning the skills.(3/07) No prerequisites required.
